Think economically, and insulate from the outside

You have three different options for insulating the roof of your new construction effectively against energy loss. An attic insulation is recommended if you do not or do not yet wish to develop your attic floor. Waterproofing and insulation from inside is recommended for dry attic storey interior construction. An exterior, “on-rafter” insulation provides advantages not just for roof renovations, but also for new constructions. On-rafter insulation is often the more favourable variant, as it is easier to construct and uses less material. It also leaves more interior usable space, and leaves the beams visible as a design element!

For interior rooms with flair

On-rafter insulations in new constructions permit open and visible roof constructions and therefore living spaces with highly individual charm. Using perfectly-aligned system components, you can achieve high-performance waterproofing and insulation either “solo” on the roof or – with exceptional insulation values – as a supplement to intermediate rafter insulation. The basic materials used for the systems vary. The non-flammable insulation material rock wool, for example, features, in addition to excellent thermal insulation qualities, top-class fire protection and optimum sound insulation properties.

Convincing insulation combinations

Thermal materials based on natural mineral wool also produce high-performance roof insulations. Vapour retardant barriers laid flat on the exterior facilitate the construction of energy-efficient combinations of intermediate and on-rafter insulation. The recommended insulation material thicknesses are 120 to 140 mm between the rafters and 100 to 120 mm on the rafters.

Excellent insulation made lightweight and thin

On-rafter insulation made of the hard foam high-performance insulation material polyurethane (PUR/PIR) can achieve high insulation values with thin materials. These elements are also recommended if an intermediate rafter insulation is to be supplemented through on-rafter insulation. An appropriate air and vapour barrier protects the construction against moisture rising from the building interior.

Vapour-permeable on-roof insulation elements

The thin, but high-performance PUR/PIR panels are vapour-permeable, so that moisture can diffuse out of the roof construction. If the panels are covered with a special reflective underlay, the construction is better protected from the heat of summer. Specially-aligned vapour barriers, adhesive tapes, sealing substances and connection rolls complete the range of products available for this system.

Wood: Nature as roof insulation

Flexible wood-fibre insulation boards can also be laid easily onto an air-tight layer over the rafters. In terms of energy, this provides highly-effective sealing and insulation units. After applying the layer, immediate water drainage is guaranteed. 

An attractive appearance plus warmth – slate on its own insulation

New on-rafter insulation improves the stability and thermal insulation balance of slate roofs. These thin insulation elements, which can be fixed using nails or screws, are produced from PUR/PIR hard foam and convince purchasers with their thermal insulation value of 0.024 W/m2K.

Even with insulation thicknesses of up to 160 mm, the on-rafter insulation alone achieves U-values of 0.14 W/m²K – the insulation standards for passive housing! In combination with intermediate rafter insulation, U-values of 0.08 W/m²K can be achieved. The result – aesthetically highly-attractive slate roofs able to cope with the requirements for all future Energy Saving Ordinances (EnEV) right up to the plus energy houses of the future!
