Seal now; develop later

The roofs of newly-constructed houses must be insulated; this is stipulated in the Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV). Should you not or not yet wish to extend your living space into the attic, you can also insulate the attic floor instead of the pitched roof. This can be done quickly and doesn’t cost a lot. Modern attic insulation solutions even permit the attic storey to be accessed and used as storage space. A special thermally-insulated attic storey ladder assists in maintaining the good insulation values.

Attic insulation

Well-advised with mineral wool insulation materials

Insulation mats made of mineral wool are lightweight and easy to lay “from the roll”. Prior to this, a vapour barrier should be applied to the base floor in order to protect the insulation layer against rising damp from the house interior. The insulation mats protect the storeys below from cooling in winter and against excessive heat in summer. They also improve the fire and sound protection within your house.

Inexpensive attic floor insulation

Even with insulation felts made of glass wool, the insulation requirements of the EnEV are simple and inexpensive to fulfil. If the attic is not utilised, insulation felt can be laid on the storey floor. If the attic is to remain permanently accessible, the insulation material can be positioned between wooden battens, the height of which accords with that of the insulation material thickness and onto which, for example, running planks can be laid. When laying the thermal insulation, all connections must be made thermal bridge-free. Here too, you should first adhere an air-tight vapour barrier across the entire surface.
